Hip Hop Creativity

A lot of fuss has been made in the music industry nowadays, regarding the use of industry standard hip hop sample beats versus the use of live instrumentation. Personally who cares? The main driving force behind hip hop is creativity first. Maybe that is what’s lost in hip hop today.

As a musician I can completely understand that side of the argument and why people complain. When you go to a show there is something about the energy from a performer who is in a zone with a live group behind them and everyone on stage is in that same zone with the audience, it’s a wonderful experience. At this level the main point you are trying to reach is to leave your audience with something more than your CD on loudspeaker; you want them to understand not only what you do but why you do it, even if only for that moment in time. If you have any question about the true power of live instrumentation with regards to music, I challenge anyone who has never done it to visit a Football field in the southern part of the United States on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon, and just be amazed. For those who understand what a marching band can really do no further info is necessary.

However, the use of standard hip hop sample beats does have a draw that is almost hypnotic. And I am sure all producers out there can agree with that. There is something about the possibilities being endless that almost tips the scale in the direction of creativity that way. To be able to take a portion of a song 10,20,30 years or even more in some cases, and then change the main idea of that portion, and make it relevant to the intended audience today is amazing. For relevance of this tactic just listen to the majority of Hip Hop from the east coast, as well the emerging scene in the UK that I give more respect to every time I hear something new.

In closing I would like to say this on both sides of this argument. Do what works for you not what works for someone else. If you’re a fan of the auto tune, then get your T-Pain on, if not tell your friends not to listen to Kanye West’s last CD when your around. Stock hip hop sample beats are around to stay; guys have been using them for years to refine their craft. If it’s not for you, or you just want a different type of sound, believe it or not cats still do jam sessions and would love someone to come and freestyle a few bars, so everyone there could perfect their craft. Again just be creative and the fans will follow. Why don’t you guys let me know what you think……?
